We were introduced to Digital Photography & Imaging, what it is and the content that we will be learning throughout the class, such as how to use photoshop as well as the different projects we will have to do.
Tutorial
We were introduced to Google Classroom, which will be the main site that we will use to submit our work as well as search for previous weeks' content. We were then informed about the first exercise that we will work on between Weeks 1-3, where we have to create a collage using cut out images from magazines, newspapers, and other physical pieces of media for us to then put together into a collage. The purpose of this exercise is to give us the understanding that if we are able to create something physical, we can create something digital as well as we possess the creative knowledge to do so. We were also introduced to previous students' collages to inspire us.
Practical
For our practical assignment for this week, we had to find three graphic designs from Pinterest that we liked and write about the elements of the designs that we found interesting or liked. This was for us to express our interests for our lecturer to gain a better understanding of us.
Design #1: Fantasy

Description: The design above is a fanmade poster for the Lord of the Rings franchise. What I really liked about this poster is its unique art style that resembles that of ancient drawings depicting characters in mythology. Some examples of this can be seen with ancient mythological pantheons such as Greeks, Romans, Nords and Egyptians as the art styles used to portray stories from back then can be seen being emulated above. Not only do I enjoy the mythological factor with the art style, but the franchise as well as I am a big fan of the fantasy genre. The battle being depicted above comes from the final battle of the trilogy where the riders of Rohirrim charge against the orcs at Minas Tirith. The depiction of the riders coming down to strike down the orcs portrays them as angels descending from heaven, another biblical and/or mythological allusion that I found interesting. |
Design #2: History

|
Description: The design above depicts a cat in a propaganda-style poster wearing Chinese communist clothing with the name “Chairman Meow” titled above him. I found this poster to be quite humorous as it pokes fun at a historical figure who was a major influence on the Country of China, whether it be for better or for worse; I do not know much about Chinese history however I do know that there are some negative views of Chairman Mao. Another aspect of this poster that I enjoyed was the use of the cat as the centrepiece as it immediately draws in the main focus of the poster since cats are generally a well loved species. Having the cat be dressed up as an important figure within communist history creates an ironic tone that makes fun of the political party’s history as well as portraying them as a joke. |
Design #3: Space

Description: The poster depicted above shows a skeleton inside of an astronaut suit floating in space with Earth, the Moon, and Saturn being placed in the background. What I really liked about this poster was the sense of eeriness it creates for the tone as the depiction of a deceased astronaut floating in space builds onto two fears that I believe were being represented in the poster, those two fears being the fear of outer space and the fear of eternity. The universe is constantly expanding and we will never know the full extent of its reach as new systems are being discovered every now and then. The distance between those systems are also extremely vast and it leaves a void of nothingness between each other that would drive a person insane. I personally am a big fan of science fiction, especially if it deals with outer space as it opens up a wide variety of ideas and concepts that would normally be limited were it set on Earth. |
Design #4: Manga

Description: I decided to add a fourth design because I wanted to talk about one more design that I really enjoyed. The design shown is a volume cover of a manga series called “Chainsaw Man,” in which the protagonist makes a deal with the devil to save his life, ultimately transforming him into the Chainsaw Man. I personally really enjoy this cover because of the sharp contrasts it presents between what it’s showing and how it’s being presented. The bright and vibrant colours contrast the violent and gore-heavy theme which is something that I want to emulate in my own personal work. Having sharp, vibrant colours in a piece of media can help to create its own distinct artstyle and flow which can help set it apart from other pieces of media. |
