Digital Photography & Imaging - Week 2
Lecture
Our lecture for this week introduced us to four basic composition components, those being:
Focal Points:
- A specific point that helps the viewer focus on the primary and most important element being presented to them.
Scale & Hierarchy:
- Scale is used to help draw the viewer towards the more important aspects of a piece and draw them away from the less important elements. This is used to help signify importance with the communication.
Element Balancing:
- Element balancing is the idea of giving certain elements "weight" in a piece.
- Giving certain aspects more weight increases their importance within the piece.
- Element balancing is useful for asymmetrical designs.
White Space:
- White space, also known as "empty space," is a much simpler component that helps to balance the focus of a composition. Due to the empty space that it brings, it forces the viewer to focus on other aspects that break the pattern of white space.
- White space can be used boost a design's overall clarity and balance by removing unnecessary elements so that the piece can "breathe."
After learning about these four components, we moved onto two more design principles that help to improve a piece's quality, those two being the Rule of Thirds and the Golden Ratio.
Rule of Thirds:
- The rule of thirds is a design principle which separates a piece into thirds vertically and horizontally via two lines, which creates nine equal squares and four intersecting points on a piece. Those four points are the most important areas of the principle as having elements be placed on one of the four areas creates a much more natural piece.
- The two horizontal lines in the Rule of Thirds are often used to place the horizon in a photo.
- The purpose of the Rule of Thirds is to create a composition that is visually pleasing to the viewer's eyes as well as make creative use of negative space.
Golden Ratio:
- The Golden Ratio is a mathematical ratio that is commonly found in nature and architecture.
- The Golden Ratio can create a very natural, organic and pleasing composition due to it's strong connection with reality.
- One of the main purposes of this concept is to create aesthetically pleasing piece that can help create a feeling of harmony and artistry.
- The Golden Ratio is useful for creating and determining basic design layouts as well as the dimensions of a piece.
Tutorial
For our tutorial we were introduced to how we can compose and layout our collage for the assignment.
Practical
Our practical work for this week was to work on our collage's pre-compositions by cutting out and arranging our elements into three designs that we would then submit to our lecturer for them to decide on which piece is the best.
I decided to create my collage using a rock magazine dedicated to the late singer Ronnie James Dio, who was the lead vocalist for bands such as Rainbow, Black Sabbath and DIO. I chose him specifically because he is one of my personal favourite vocalists of all time, he had such a beautiful and strong voice that created a magical feel with his songs. Because of the amount of pages dedicated to him in the magazine, I was able to create designs using them based around his passing.
Rather than cutting out all the elements and then piecing them together, I chose to instead photograph them and cut out the unnecessary elements using Procreate before arranging them together. I wanted to do this because I wanted to have a clearer vision of what I wanted to do as I didn't want to cut out elements and end up not using them. Once I receive feedback on which pre-composition is the best by my teacher, I will then cut out those elements and attach them together.
My lecturer ended up selecting my second submission from the three that I submitted. I was surprised as I considered that one to be my least favourite. However I am not one to argue with my lecturer so I began working on my physical version.
