PRACTICAL

Exercise 1: Editing Exercise
For the first exercise, we were given two google drive folders containing footage for two different ads, our objective was to arrange them in the correct order.

Figure 1.1: Editing Exercise 1, Week 1 (29/8/23)

The first video was simple as all of the different video files were labeled with the order they came in, but with our second exercise, the clips were labeled in a random order which made us have to figure out the correct order by identifying the narrative structure.

Figure 1.2: Editing Exercise 2, Week 1 (29/8/23)

At first we started working together in small groups to try and figure out the order but as I was a quarter of the way through I got curious and googled the ad we were given on YouTube and found the exact ad we were editing. From there I would go back and forth just to double check and confirm if I was putting them in the right order. Once I had them in the correct order I wrote it down and shared it with my friends.

Exercise 2: Framing Exercise
For our second exercise, we had to recreate eight different shots that were provided to us in our lecture notes.

Figure 2.1: Eight Shots, Week 2 (5/9/23)

I partnered with my friend Alyssa and we just went around the floor we were on and looked for locations that would work well for our shots.

Our eight shots can be seen here:

Exercise 3: Three-Act Structure Exercise
For our third exercise, we had to analyse two short films and identify the three-act structure used in the film and where each point is.

Figure 3.1: Guang Short Film, Week 3 (12/9/23)

The first short film that we watched was a film called Guang which followed the story of an autistic guy and his brother who is setting him up for a job interview at his company and wants him to be there on time. However Guang is a musical genius and has been searching for the correct glass to complete his set made of differently shaped glasses. While on his way to the job interview he finds the glass and returns home, forgetting about the job interview completely and gets scolded by his brother who gives up on him, but not before listening to him perform his musical piece with all of the glasses he collected.

Figure 3.2: Lalin Short Film, Week 3 (12/9/23)

The second short film that we watched was a film called Lalin which followed the story of an ugly girl called Lalin who moves to Japan to escape her past life and become a sort of model.

Exercise 4: Lalin Exercise
For our fourth exercise, we had to create a thirty-five second edit of a scene from the short film "Lalin" where the character of Lalin is afraid to confront her friend who came to Japan to visit her due to her believing he'll call her ugly.

Exercise 5: Stop Motion Test
For our fifth exercise, we were put into groups of four and had to create a short stop motion scene as a test to see if we can move onto our final project. We also had to use the materials that were leftover in the room from other stop-motion projects like clay, cardboard props, legos, and other objects.

Figure 5.1: Behind the Scenes photo of our shoot, Week 10 (31/10/23)

For our story, we decided to use the cardboard car that we found and have it be used to shoot a car crash scene. As for what the car crashed into, we were messing around with the clay and one of us brought up the idea of the car running into a cat and crashing, showcasing the aftermath and their ghosts flying away.

Once we were done shooting, the camera man exported the footage and sent it to all of us, albeit as photos rather than a video export but that was ok as I was able to convert the settings in Premiere Pro to accommodate for stop motion.

Exercise 6: VFX Test
Our last exercise for this class was to perform a VFX test using After Effects, the tutorial for how to perform this exercise was provided for us in one of the google slides Mr. Martin made for us.

FEEDBACK

REFLECTION

Experience
I found these exercises to be quite educational, especially the VFX test as I had never done this kind of work before and my experience with After Effects was quite minimal so learning all of this for the first time was pretty cool. I've already had plenty of experience with Adobe Premiere Pro and filmmaking so the first few exercises didn't really give me much more knowledge.

Observation
There wasn't much that I noticed throughout the exercises as I already knew most of this stuff but being able to work on this kind of work was refreshing for me as I hadn't done it for quite some time.

Findings
I found that I quite enjoy editing videos a lot out of the whole process despite the amount of work that I have to do single-handedly, hopefully I could do this kind of work in the future.
