Project 2A: Double Exposure
Exercise 1: Follow Tutorial
For the double exposure assignment, we were required to first follow the video tutorial provided and recreate the process on our own.
Figure 1.1: Clipping Mask
Using the provided image, I used the magic wand tool to select the subject, remove the background and created a new layer mask of the lady.
Figure 1.2: Trees added in
From there, I added in the trees and used the clipping mask tool to take over her outline. I then copy and pasted the image of the tree and reflected it horizontally to fill out the rest of the body. After that, I used the colour picker tool to fill in the background so that the image wouldn't look so weird. Once I had all of that done, I used the eraser tool on the clipping mask to reveal her face for the composition. Lastly, I added in the clouds and birds to finish the composition.

Exercise 2: Personal Version
Figure 1.4: Photo Used
The photo seen above is a picture that I took in the outfit that I wanted to use for this project, I wanted to do something interesting that had a unique outline and the cowboy hat was able to create that.
Figure 1.5: Greyscaling & Clipping Mask
From there, I followed the same process of selecting the subject using the magic wand tool and removed the background so it only had me. But for this project, I decided to greyscale the image to make colour correction easier for me and so that afterwards I could add on a gradient without needing to worry about different colours mixing with each other.
Figure 1.6: Canyon Image

Figure 1.7: Clipping Mask (Left), Face Added In (Right)
After that, I added in my image that I would be using for the double exposure element of the piece. Because my outfit was western inspired, I chose to use an image of a canyon to fit with the theme. Once I repeated the same process as the first part, I used the eraser tool to reveal my face and part of my outfit. To finish the piece I chose to reuse the cloud and bird assets from the first part of the exercise to add in other elements and to give this piece some colour, I added in a brown-ish gradient map to add onto the western effect since browns were one of the most common colours used in western films. I really liked the way it turned out as there are certain areas of my outfit that smoothly blend into the background image.
FINAL Personal Double Exposure

I enjoyed these two exercises, the process of double exposure recreation on photoshop is interesting and opens up a lot of potential ideas that I could do for either school projects or personal projects.
Project 2B: MyTIGER Poster
For this assignment, we were required to create a poster to submit to Maybank by the 1st of June for their MyTIGER Values Art Competition. The competition was designed for students to create a poster based on one of the available Sustainable Development Goals as some of them weren't allowed.
Figure 2.1: MyTIGER Competition Poster
With my class however, submitting the final poster to Maybank was considered optional so that they could focus on their other works instead and have this be submitted as an exercise. Because this was a poster design project / exercise, I decided to use SDG 16 which represented Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions. Because I would not be submitting this poster to Maybank, I had a lot more time to work on it so I started off by researching about my topic and came up with a mood board of elements that I could incorporate into my poster.
The main goals of my SDG are to reduce any and all forms of violence and death rates everywhere; to end abuse, exploitation, trafficking and all forms of violence and torture; to promote the rule of law at national and international levels and ensure equal access to justice for all and to significantly reduce corruption and bribery in any and all forms.
Figure 2.2: Mood Board
Once I had a basic mood board for ideas that I wanted to present I made two basic sketches of two ideas that I had for what I could do.
Figure 2.3: My Two Sketches
I wanted to incorporate different elements that represented justice such as the Sword of Justice, one of the more common symbols associated with justice. After thinking about how I would create them on photoshop, I chose to use the sketch on the left as it felt easier to create and didn't require having to edit text also.
Figure 2.4: Composition First Step in Photoshop
After collecting the different elements, I placed them all onto my canvas and moved them around so to where they matched the sketch. Once that was done, I started removing elements I didn't need and tried to figure out how to shape the arm into my desired effect as I wanted to keep the cross-guard on the sword without making the fist look unnatural.
Figure 2.5: Altered Elements
After some deliberation, I ultimately decided to remove the cross-guard since I already had the sword element already present in the composition. After removing parts of the beam from the scale to make it look like the fist is actually holding it, I moved onto altering the lighting and implementing a fade from sword to fist.
Figure 2.6: Gradients Added
Originally I wanted to have the gradient affect both elements without altering any of the other pieces in the composition, however I realised while editing that it doesn't work like that and the gradient only works for one layer at a time. So instead I had to use two different gradient fills and then had to match them up so that it looks like one gradient instead which took some editing. While I was at this stage I was thinking about what I could add to the scales to make them feel less empty and I decided to add in the words JUS and ICE to their respective scales while the T would be represented with the whole collage.
Figure 2.7: JUS & ICE Added
After I added in the text I noticed that they were positioned above the scales and if I tried to send them backwards they would go behind the scales entirely since they're connected. What I had to do to solve this was to go in and remove all of the space in between the chains individually since I couldn't highlight all of them at once. After that I had to make sure they were a png so that the letters would be visible underneath the chains. Once that issue was dealt with I chose to change the hue of the whole canvas to a dark blue since that colour was often used to represent the department of justice.
FINAL MyTIGER Poster Composition

Rationale
The piece above is meant to represent the ideals of justice, with multiple aspects of the composition having different representations of justice. The first being the sword of justice commonly used by Lady Justice, the personification of what justice is meant to represent that was created during the Ancient Greek era. The blindfolded woman also represents the phrase “Justice is blind, not heartless” which is meant to reflect the ideals of justice being impartial to a person regardless of their identity. The raised fist has multiple different meanings, but the most recent one that I chose to focus on was the Black Lives Matter movement, which started due to racial inequality and racism towards African-Americans. The scales that I edited to be held in the hand come from the scales of justice, which represent fairness in court as both sides of a party are to be judged equally. The beam, hand and sword create the shape of the letter “t,” which completes the “Justice” text of the composition. Finally there’s the dark blue colour palette that encompasses the whole piece. I decided to use dark blue as that is the colour most commonly used by police officers and the Department of Justice.
Reflection
For our second project this class, I personally have mixed feelings about what we did for this project. On one hand, I enjoyed the double exposure exercise as I got to work with clipping masks for the first time which may be my favourite aspect and tool that we can use in Photoshop due to the amount of creative ideas we can perform with it. Learning about double exposure was also an interesting experience for me as I found the style to be really intriguing and allowed for unique expressions of ideas if done right. I do plan on trying out more content like this in the future or during the break.
On the other hand I did not enjoy the MyTIGER Project, I personally felt that it was too forced and didn't fit in with all the other assignments and exercise we did in this module. The fact that there were a lot of restrictions on what we couldn't do and the fact that it was a competition as well made the overall experience a lot less enjoyable as it puts more pressure on us rather than this just being another exercise that we had to do. And because of that, I would say that I performed terribly on the MyTIGER Project for both this class and for the Illustration & Visual Narrative class. Looking back at my work for this project, it looks incredibly rushed and low effort which will definitely lower my grades for this project but in the end I'm glad I was able to at least submit something. I do wish I spent more time and effort on this project however as seeing what my classmates were able to do after submitting this inspired me to do better and push myself to work harder as we didn't really get to share our work with each other for this project.
Overall I would say this project was a mixed bag for me, there were areas I enjoyed and areas I disliked however that's most likely what my experience will be in university so I best prepare myself for the future. At least I learned something from this.
