Task 3 - Design
INSTRUCTIONS
PRACTICAL
For Task 3, we were given the task of producing our own work of design that is either inspired / influenced by the work we analysed or a reaction to it. We are allowed to use any medium for the design and any materials as long as we can convey a visual message.
Part 1: Sketching
To start, I created a few sketches of what I had in mind based off of the design that I analysed in Task 1 and 2.

Figure 1.1: Sketch 1 (07/03/24) |
For my first sketch, I wanted to follow up on the idea of nature thriving despite harsh environments so I drew a daffodil growing in an environment that is completely and utterly destroyed and devoid of life as seen with the burned buildings, trees, and fire in the background. I added in a human in an astronaut suit similar to the human from the design I analysed as I wanted to have it connect in some way. I chose to use a daffodil as it is a flower that represents hope, rebirth and new beginnings.
Figure 1.2: Sketch 2 (07/03/24) |
For this sketch, I decided to have two people rowing a boat in a flooded city since flooding is another major issue that happens with climate change, rising temperatures melt the polar ice caps which causes sea levels to rise near coastal regions.

Figure 1.3: Sketch 3 (07/03/24) |
For the third sketch, I wanted to have a larger sense of scale while still connecting to the climate action SDG so I sketched a man watching as an iceberg falls apart in front of him. After showing these designs to my lecturer Dr. Charles, he immediately said no to Sketch 2 and 3 but he really liked the idea for sketch 1. He also advised me that I should get rid of the human from the design as it takes away the focus from the flower surviving what happened around it. Once I had the idea down, I was told I should come up with other designs using the same idea just to try out how I could present the piece.

Figure 1.4: New Sketch 1 (14/03/24) |
I expanded upon my original idea by creating a sketch of the daffodil being placed in a burned down forest rather than a town-like location.

Figure 1.5: New Sketch 2 (14/03/24) |
For my second sketch, I had the idea of using a lotus flower instead of daffodil and creating a "mirrored" drawing where from our point-of-view, we see a sole lotus flower surrounded by a bunch of wilted and dead flowers in muddy water. On the opposite side of the mirror however, we see all of those flowers surviving and thriving in a more colourful location.

Figure 1.6: New Sketch 3 (14/03/24) |
For the third new sketch, I decided to create a poster design of a sunflower on top of a dirt mound standing strong and healthy while all the other sunflowers around it were wilted and dead. After showing the new sketches to Dr. Charles, he said that the sketches in Figure 1.4 and 1.6 were really good and that I should choose to do one of them. I decided to do the sketch from Figure 1.4 as I already put in more effort for that sketch.
Part 2: Designing

Figure 2.1: Colour & Smoke Added (14/03/24) |
Once I had my design selected, I started adding colour to the ground first with the grey-ish brown dirt and the light green grass, though I changed the colour of it later on as it didn't feel natural enough to me. I also added in a layer of smoke near the top of the piece using an airbrush tool.

Figure 2.2: Flowers Coloured (21/03/24) |
Next, I started colouring in the daffodils just so I could get them out of the way as they required the most detail. I used photos of daffodils that I found online as a reference since I didn't know how to draw them. It was here I also changed the colour of the grass to suit the flowers. The second thing I did was colouring in the background so that I could change the colours freely without affecting any other elements of the piece. I also hid the airbrushed layer so I could more easily colour in the background as well as test to see what colours work well with it.

Figure 2.3: Trees & Background Coloured (21/03/24) |
After trying out different colours for the background, I finally found one that suited what I wanted and started colouring in the trees with different shades of brown as well as adding in another airbrush layer on the dirt to try and give it a dirtier feel.

Figure 2.4: Background Trees Added (21/03/24) |
In order to try and add more trees to the background so it felt more alive, I used darker shades of grey and for the trees in the background so I could add some depth to the piece while also giving a fog-like effect. I also added in two more brown trees to fill in some space.

After showing what I had so far to Dr. Charles, he recommended I combine the two trees on the right and try and make them thicker as the sense of scale with them isn't consistent. After I combined them together, I added in textures for the trees using one of the brushes that was available on Procreate and made additional touch-ups to the piece so it looked nice.

FEEDBACK
Week 5
The idea that I have in mind for my first sketch is great but it can do without the human figure in the background as it take the emphasis and dominance of the flower away. The other two designs are not good however, I should focus on coming up with other designs similar to my first one just to see how I could present it.
Week 6
My second and fourth sketch were really good and could be interesting to design, the third one isn't as interesting however. I should pick between one of the two and create my final design off of them.
Week 7
Everything about the design is great, however I should thicken the trees on the right side of the design as the sense of scale and proportioning feels a bit off with them. Other than that everything else is fine.
REFLECTION
Experience
I really enjoyed this task as I got to put my creative skills to the test and it felt like I was actually doing something instead of just reading and typing down what I saw. I found the design process entertaining as well and it's nice being able to design pieces without there being too many rules that we have to follow.
Observation
While I was working on coming up with the concept sketches for what I wanted to do, I always noticed that my first sketch always has the most effort put into it and the most thought and the designs that come after it aren't as impressive or as well thought out.
Findings
I found this task overall to be really fun despite the short timeframe we were given, though because we had fewer classes this semester it was a lot more enjoyable.
