Task 02 - Design Proposition

INSTRUCTIONS

PRACTICAL
For Task 2, the main focus was to work on design exploration and refining our concepts that we presented in Task 1.

Sketches
After we presented our proposal from Task 1, I moved onto designing the characters as we were told by one of our lecturers that I, the group member who studied Entertainment Design, should be doing the sketches and character design instead of our other group member Jane who is a much better artist than me. I started off by doing basic block out sketches for his outfit designs so that we could take a look and see what works, what doesn't and what we can combine to create an outfit that best suits the character.

Figure 1.2: Kellie Sketches

Figure 1.3: Kellie Mood Board

His colour scheme had to primarily be blue as it reflected the real world Kellie's Scottish heritage that we wanted to try and keep with his design. Because of that, I tried to come up with outfits that also had kilts in the design since that is a traditional piece of Scottish clothing. Additionally, sarungs are a traditional piece of Malay clothing that's quite prominent in our culture so combining the two of them together would add to the design since the story takes place in Malaysia. Originally the plan was to have it take place in a fictional fantasy location but we were advised that having it be set in Malaysia would be better.

When I asked my other group members which design they liked the most, they agreed that the outfit for sketch #7 was the best overall but we could make some changes. The first being that the belt should be underneath the jacket and the second being that we should remove the gloves.

Figure 1.4: Agnes Sketches

Figure 1.5: Agnes Mood Board

Once I was done with Kellie, I moved onto doing sketches for Agnes' outfit designs. Originally I was going to do five sketches for her formal / royal outfit and five sketches for her casual / peasant outfit but after we redid the script, we removed that storyline to save time so I stopped with the casual designs. We went with red for her primary colour as it nicely contrasted Kellie's blue, along with that the antagonist of our story, the Blossom Bane is purple which is the combination of red and blue.

When I presented the designs to the group they unanimously agreed that sketch #2 was the best out of all of them so I went ahead and used that design.

Figure 1.6: Blossom Bane Sketches

Figure 1.7: Blossom Bane Mood Board

With the two protagonists done, I moved onto the sketches for our antagonist the Blossom Bane who's primary feature is their flower head inspired by shows like Hell's Paradise. Additionally, when we presented our basic ideas in Task 1 our lecturers said we should research supernatural / mythical creatures that reside in Perak and add elements from them into the antagonist. As such, I decided to use the Hantu Raya as the primary inspiration for the design as it's a folklore creature connected to forests that uses black magic to curse people after making a deal with them. However, there were no actual designs or sketches for what this creature looks like so I had to come up with my own designs.

Another element that we wanted to keep with the design is that we wanted it to be "beautiful but deadly," by having it's exterior look pretty at a glance but unnatural and unnerving up close, such as the skinny chest revealing the ribs. I toyed with different idea such as giving it branch arms, a larger cloak, and spider-like legs that resembled the roots of a carnation flower which was the main inspiration.

After showing the design to my groupmates they really liked the larger cloak that covered the body for sketch #5 but we wanted to keep the gangly deathly body to keep the idea that it's still deadly. I personally wanted to keep the root legs as it added another level of fantasy to it's design.

Figure 1.8: Blossom Bane colour tests

After finishing and updating the design, I moved onto doing colour tests to see what would look best for the design. Sketch #1 is meant to be more muted and duller to better convey the deathly appearance, sketch #2 is a brighter design and sketch #3 is meant to follow the 60-30-10 colour rule however it doesn't look very nice. In the end we agreed with sketch #2 for the colour palette as it worked best for the character, however I decided to tweak the colours a little more so it would be more pleasing.

Figure 1.9: Butler Sketches

The last of the sketches that I did was for the butler however there isn't exactly much that you can do to create multiple butler outfits since they're quite similar to one another so I did two different ones and ended it there.

Turnarounds
With the sketches done, I moved onto doing the character turnarounds so we would have a definitive design for the important characters.

Figure 2.1: Kellie Turnaround

The first turnaround that I did was for Kellie since he's one of the two protagonists so it would only make sense to do them first. I mainly kept the design elements that we liked with the design and used old sketches that my groupmate did for the body structure since she did some sketches before I did.

The most difficult part for me was doing the side profile as those are one of my weakest skills since I'm not great with anatomy, especially since we're aiming to do a stylized art style so it was even harder.

Figure 2.2: Agnes Turnaround

With Kellie done, I moved onto Agnes who didn't have to have many design changes from her sketch to her turnaround.

Figure 2.3: Blossom Bane Turnaround

After finishing the colour testing from figure 1.5, I updated the colour scheme to better suit the character and did the turnaround for the character. I also added in a fade from white at the base of the petals on the head as that's how actual carnation flowers look.

Figure 2.4: Butler Turnaround

The last turnaround that I did was for the butler as he shares a similar body structure to Kellie, just slightly thinner due to his older age. I just used a simple butler design for him since he only appears in the middle of act 2 onwards for a few scenes.

Figure 2.5: Agnes' Parents Design

The last of the important character designs that I did was for Agnes' parents who only appear for about one-to-two scenes in the story. Because of that, I reused an old design that my groupmate did when she was doing the character designs before me as they are not very important to the overall narrative, hence why they do not have a proper turnaround.

With the character designs completed I uploaded both the sketches and the turnarounds into the Task 2 slideshow to present to our lecturers.

REFLECTION
From Task 1 to Task 2, my workload for this module increased substantially as I originally didn't actually have much to do somehow as my groupmate Jane was doing the sketches for the character designs instead of me since she's a proper artist whereas I'm still learning and improving. However being able to practice with doing character block out sketches and outfit designs was a great learning experience for me as I now have a proper and better understanding for the overall process.

I do need to improve my anatomy and overall artistic skills as I mainly used a lot of references and Jane's old sketches to design the final designs since my abilities are not at an adequate level. But overall this Task was an eye opener for me that I need to spend more time in my free time to improve my skills.
