23.04.2024 - 04.08.2024 / Week 01 - Week 16 Ilhan Rayan bin Khairul Anwar / 0361205 Design Research Dissertation / Bachelor of Design (Honours) in Creative Media Task 1, 2, 3 and Final Task - Design Research Dissertation Compilation INSTRUCTIONS PRACTICAL Task 1: Dissertation Draft For our first task in this module, we had to write a minimum 7000 word dissertation about our topic and research that we conducted in Design Research Methodology. Figure 1: Dissertation Draft Task 2: Visual Design For the second task of this module, we had to create a visual design for our dissertation by turning it into a flipbook styled paper, on top of that the visual design and aesthetic has to match and share a similar theme with the dissertation's topic. Because my dissertation is on indigenous cultures and representation, I decided to try and create a design using elements that they would have used in the past to create books. I used buckskin as the cover and parchment for the pages so that it wou...

25.04.2024 - 08.08.2025 / Week 01 - Week 16 Ilhan Rayan bin Khairul Anwar / 0361205 Digital Matte Painting / Bachelor of Design (Honours) in Creative Media Project 1, 2 and Final Project INSTRUCTIONS PRACTICAL Project 1 For our Project 1 of Digital Matte Painting, we had to create three invisible set extensions where we take a baseplate image and add on other elements to it to create a new environment. Figure 1.1: Mood Board I started off by creating a mood board for what I wanted to create for this module. I wanted to have an old religious building, like a cathedral or a church, in the middle or near a mountain range that looks abandoned or empty. I loosely based this concept off of an idea from a personal project of mine where there is a massive church-like building connected into a mountain. Figure 1.2: Invisible Set Extension Idea 1 For the first idea, I wanted to have a massive cathedral be the main centerpiece of this design and have a pathway leading to it down the middle. I man...

04.07.2024 - 25.07.2024 / Week 11 - Week 14 Ilhan Rayan bin Khairul Anwar / 0361205 Character Design / Bachelor of Design (Honours) in Creative Media Task 4 - Compilation INSTRUCTIONS PRACTICAL This task is meant to be a compilation of the first three tasks, those being: Task 1: Personification Task 2: Concept Development Task 3: Character Design Executions The main purpose of this task is to combine all of the work that I have done into one portfolio post for my character bible. Before I finish however, I created two more pieces of art work for my character. Figure 1: Genshin Character Splash Art The first was a card that's often used whenever a character gets officially revealed to the public, commonly known as "Drip Marketing" within the community. I do wish my character looked a bit more high quality but it still looks really nice. My only issue with this art work was that I couldn't find the correct background for my character as while I was working on this, I no...

20.06.2024 - 04.07.2024 / Week 09 - Week 11 Ilhan Rayan bin Khairul Anwar / 0361205 Character Design / Bachelor of Design (Honours) in Creative Media Task 3 - Character Design Executions INSTRUCTIONS PRACTICAL For our Task 3. we had to finalize our character's design and draw them in their hero pose. I started off by coloring in the base outfit I drew for him because I needed a baseline reference for how I was going to color him in his hero pose. Figure 1.1: Colored Design Turnaround The design in figure 1.1 is also an updated version of his original design from Task 1 as I felt that he lacked details in some areas and that there were ways I could improve his design. I originally wanted to have the Eremite symbols on the back side of the capes but you normally wouldn't see it much in game so I decided not to include it, and so it would be easier to draw for the hero pose. Figure 1.2: Hero Pose With the coloring done, I moved onto the hero pose for his character. I was running o...

23.05.2024 - 20.06.2024 / Week 05 - Week 09 Ilhan Rayan bin Khairul Anwar / 0361205 Character Design / Bachelor of Design (Honours) in Creative Media Task 2 - Concept Development INSTRUCTIONS PRACTICAL The second task for this module is to expand upon our character for Genshin Impact by creating the weapon design, poses, as well as an alternate outfit for the character which certain characters in the game have.  Part 1: The Weapon Figure 1.1: Weapon Moodboard I started off by collecting different Middle Eastern swords to get an idea of what I could work with when creating Zarrar's signature weapon. I also used the swords wielded by the Eremite Sunfrost since he's the only Eremite enemy with a unique sword type. I really liked the idea of having a curved pommel on the sword so I decided to try and include that in my design. Figure 1.2: Weapon Sketches Because I wasn't sure on what to do for the weapon, I started off by doing some basic sketches before really liking what I ha...

25.04.2024 - 16.05.2024 / Week 01 - Week 04 Ilhan Rayan bin Khairul Anwar / 0361205 Character Design / Bachelor of Design (Honours) in Creative Media Task 1 - Personification LECTURES   Lecture Notes INSTRUCTIONS PRACTICAL The main project for this module is to create an original character design for the video game Genshin Impact. As someone who has played this game since it first came out, I am quite familiar with it and have already had many ideas about original characters, but I have never had the time to truly flesh them out. For Task 1, we had to start by creating and coming up with the concepts for our character. I decided to make my character be an Eremite commando and respected warrior inspired by the Fremen from the Dune series as I was obsessed with the franchise at the time. From there I started collecting reference photos for what I wanted to have in my character's design. Figure 1.1: Character References I also wanted for my character to have some connections to one of...

Character Design - Lecture Notes

25.04.2024 - DD.MM.YYYY / Week 01 - Week ?? Ilhan Rayan bin Khairul Anwar / 0361205 Character Design / Bachelor of Design (Honours) in Creative Media Lecture Notes Week 1: Module Introduction No Notes Week 2:   Conceptual World Building World Building World building is a fictional place where the characters will live, work, and play.  All pieces of fictional media starts off with world building. Draws heavy inspiration from our own world. There are two main approaches to world building: Approach 1: You have a story but no world There should be one or two key functions that the character must fulfill. Work out these functions then craft the remaining elements of our wolrd by paying special attention to how the key functions affetc one another, Approach 2: You have a world but no characters Create increasingly specifric details for the world. Boundaries become territories, become countries, become governments and cultures and so on. Authors who use this technique make their wor...
