Project 01 - Exterior and Landscape Design

INSTRUCTIONS

PRACTICAL
For project 1 of Environment Design, we had to come up with a proposal along with the exterior and the landscape design of our chosen environment.

I knew from the start I wanted to design a map for Marvel Rivals as I was obsessed with the game at the time. As of writing this I am still obsessed with the game as it's incredibly fun especially with friends. I came up with two ideas for what I could do for the environment, the first being Castle Doom, the castle owned by the Marvel villain Victor Von Doom in the fictional country of Latveria. Latveria plays an incredibly crucial role in a lot of Marvel stories and Doom is already a character in Marvel Rivals so designing a map based on his home would make the most sense. The exterior would the castle obviously and the interior would be the throne room that players would have to most likely fight over.

My second idea was to do Xandar, a fictional planet that plays a vital role for the cosmic side of the Marvel universe for characters that exist and operate outside of Earth in space. The exterior would be a location on Xandar and the interior would be the Nova Corps' Worldmind which is the only important interior location that I could find in regards to the planet.

I decided to go with Xandar as it suited my Game Art character who primarily operated in space after leaving New York. Plus there are other characters who operate on the cosmic side of the Marvel universe in Marvel Rivals so it'd make sense to design a map for this location, characters like the Guardians of the Galaxy would fit in on this map and would have unique dialogue with it as well.

Figure 1.1: First Exterior Sketch

I started off by creating my first sketch of the exterior building along with the environment surrounding it. I originally wanted to have my drawing feature a long road going towards the main building with buildings surrounding it however as I tried to make it work I realized that it looked terrible.

Figure 1.2: Nova Corps Headquarters Design Sketch

After that I decided to try and come up with a design for the headquarters so I would at least know what it looked like when I drew the rest of the environment. I knew I wanted to have the Nova Corps logo visible on the front of the building as well as a very panel-y exterior to match the sci-fi aesthetic.

Figure 1.3: Exterior Updated Design

Once I had the idea down, I went to Blender and used very rough shapes to create a frame for what I wanted the design of the environment to look like. I wanted to have two buildings with a bridge connecting them to be present before the main building but as I started adding detail to the two buildings, I realized that it took away the main focus of the drawing, which was the headquarters so I removed them in Figure 1.4.

Figure 1.4: Clearer Exterior

After some feedback regarding the building looking bland, I decided to go back into Blender and made an entirely new building shape that resembled the star logo which would be more interesting that just a large triangular building.

Figure 1.5: New Building Design

With the new exterior done, I started adding some very basic details such as a pathway to the entrance and some land on the exterior, I hadn't fully come up with what that land could be but I left it there so i could come back later and update it.

Figure 1.6: More Details Added

After more feedback saying that the exterior was very empty, I added in the details that he recommended such as paneling, segmenting and reshaping so it looked more high tech.

Figure 1.7: Finalized Exterior Building

With the deadline nearing, I started rushing and added in as many details as I could to the design such as the ship, elevation so that I could have a driveway that goes under the building and a statue in the exterior location. I also added in colours to finish it off.

REFLECTION
I found this project to be alright, architecture is not my strongest area of expertise but I do enjoy coming up with ideas for it. I'm the kind of person who prefers to come up with ideas rather than executing them. The whole process was a big boring as I kept having to go back and re do my designs as nothing was sticking and I couldn't find something that worked towards what I wanted.
